What Should I Wear to a Wedding If I Do Not Want to Wear Beige?

You can wear colour and print to a wedding without upstaging anyone. Here is how, and which Toomi dresses we would pick.

Somewhere along the line, wedding guest dressing became an exercise in apologising. Nothing white, nothing too bright, nothing that might photograph louder than the bride, and so half the guest list turns up in the same tasteful shade of oatmeal.

The short answer: wear colour and print. The only real wedding rules are do not wear white, do not wear anything that reads as a bridal gown, and follow the dress code on the invitation. A bold print dress breaks none of them.

The rules that actually matter

  • No white, ivory or cream. That includes off-white pieces. Leave it for the couple.
  • Read the invitation. Black tie, cocktail and garden party mean different hem lengths and different fabrics.
  • Think about the venue. Grass and sand mean flat shoes. A long outdoor afternoon means fabric that breathes.

That is the whole list. Nothing on it says beige.

Why colour works better in the photos

Wedding photos last decades, and a room of neutrals reads as a room of nobody. A print gives the photographer something to find you by, and it gives you something to be remembered in. The trick is choosing one loud thing and letting everything else go quiet: plain shoes, simple jewellery, one bag.

What we would wear

Queen of Hearts is the power move. She buttons from collar to her three-quarter length hem, so you choose the neckline and the slit, and she is 100% cotton, so she survives a long afternoon. AU 10 to 22.

Octopus Friends has a light sheen from the sateen and plenty of flow, which is what you want for a dance floor. AU 10 to 22.

The Ultimate Maxi in Seagulls is the beach or garden wedding answer: the lightest cotton we make without being see-through, with buttons the whole length. AU 10 to 22.

Dreamy Diver is dark navy with soft pink, mustard and purple, so it reads dressier than its jersey cotton feels. AU 6 to 26.

Cold ceremony or a long night outdoors? The Reversible Trench goes over the lot, green on one side and striped on the other, and it is water resistant. XS to XL.

Every print is designed exclusively for Toomi, so the chance of another guest turning up in yours is close to nil.

Wear the dress you would actually dance in. The couple will thank you for it.
